What is Accelerated File Transfer?

Definition of Accelerated File Transfer

Accelerated File Transfer is software that moves data across the internet using a custom protocol built on top of a UDP (User Datagram Protocol). It is meant to accelerate file transfers over high-speed networks that are unable to utilise network output due to high latency and packet loss.

Standard vs. Accelerated File Transfer

Standard file transfer protocols like FTP/S or HTTP/S depend on an underlying protocol called TCP (Transmission Control Protocol). TCP uses a window algorithmic program that reduces output as latency and packet loss increase. This results in longer waiting times for larger files to be transferred.

Accelerated File Transfer Protocol is built differently. Instead of relying on TCP only, Accelerated File Transfer uses both TCP and UDP protocols, separating into two channels of information. The UDP channel is used for file information, therefore providing the best output.

Benefits of Accelerated File Transfer

Concerned about how to integrate accelerated file transfer into your workflow? Web browsing, ftp and other file transfers rely on TCP (Transmission Control Protocol). TCP works in ideal conditions, but suffers severe bottlenecks once distance is increased over large networks. Here are some benefits to switching over to accelerated file transfer for your business:

Big data is no big deal: Accelerated file transfer software, for example IBM Aspera or Signiant, is designed to work with large data. By using all available bandwidth, it eliminates the effects of transmission latency. If you are concerned about losing files during transfer or security, all data is encrypted in flight and at rest, and you can track and receive email notifications ensuring files are not lost or forgotten.

Save on resources: The traditional way of sending files can waste employee time and energy, but with accelerated transfer, time will be saved and productivity increases because of the decreased amount of time spent waiting for files. Accelerated file transfer also will help automate your workflows, as most services have built in apps for transfer, collaboration, automation, synchronisation and streaming.

File sharing without borders: Working with international customers? With accelerated file transfer, there is no need to worry about time zone distance differences. Accelerated file transfers allow users to download and upload files quickly, making a seamless collaboration anywhere with an internet connection. In turn, you can easily help establish remote workplaces.
